Dear Friends

It is a passion of mine to share the experiences and learning's of my life. In that context, it is a profound pleasure to shine a light on the magic of co-active coaching, a post retirement career I began in earnest 30 months ago. I'll do so in a regular column appropriately named Wayne's Words.

A few words of background may help. I discovered co-active coaching in April 2001. Over the following year of training and practice with The Coaches Training Institute (CTI), I completed my professional qualifications and achieved a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) designation. What I discovered about the CTI co-active coaching model was that when a coach and client work together for the purpose of creating a better life for the client, magic happens. Further, with a mutual commitment to the coaching relationship, and a dose of courage, clients found their dreams becoming reality.

The purpose of this Wayne's Words column is to share real life examples of what's possible when humans dare to dream and then courageously begin to assume full responsibility and ownership for creating the life they want.

I have a request of you. As you read the following real life story of a professional in transition, which is my primary area of coaching focus, consider passing on this newsletter to those in your life who might want to share the journey as they navigate through transitions. I would be very grateful for spreading the word, so to speak.

Scripting Our Lives: The Limitless Opportunity

The proposition that inspires and sustains Walk With Wayne is the belief that we humans are the authors of our lives; sometimes consciously and mostly unconsciously. I'm inspired because there could be no greater gift for mankind than the never-ending opportunity to create the life we want for ourselves. I'm sustained because at every moment I am at choice in how I am going to respond to the universe that is presenting itself.

What I've come to realize through my coaching is that the life I have and who I am are the direct result of all the choices I've made. I now see that I wrote and produced my own story without being particularly conscious about what was happening. What a priceless awakening: if I'm what I am because of past choices, it follows that who I am and what life I lead in five years will be determined by the choices I make today and each day thereafter. I have the power to script and direct my future. How cool is that?

As a professional coach I've had the good fortune to witness a continuous parade of self-directed human triumph and accomplishment. Over and over again, I have seen that what clients long for or dream of, they can make real.

It is also true that we humans are nothing if inconsistent. We script success in one aspect of our life while struggling mightily in another. For example, we set out quite consciously to find fulfillment in financial planning. Within six years, our practice is thriving and there isn't enough time in the day to take advantage of all the opportunities that present themselves. We caused our intention to become reality. On the other side of the coin, we set out to find a perfect mate, as the first step in building a family. After five years, and several mismatches, we are no closer to the desired relationship. We are isolated, resentful and stuck. What can we learn from this example?

One place to look for learning is the impact of our various choices on our well being. What is true for me is that when I assume total responsibility for my life, at each and every moment, I feel clear and energized. My body is telling me I'm in alignment with myself. I'm looking forward to the next moment. On the other hand, when I am blaming others for my fate, I feel powerless and resentful. My mind becomes consumed with making myself right and in justifying my actions, opinions and judgements.

As a co-active coach, elder and leader, I want everyone to know that the opportunity to create one's future the way you want it is there for the taking; at any moment in time. I am dedicated to partnering with all those that wish to create the life of their dreams. I have a supply of pens handy and a choice of papers on which you can consciously choose to begin scripting your future.

Picking up the pen, holding it firmly, and assuming complete responsibility for your future requires faith, courage and fortitude. Are you ready to begin? Now is perfect. The world is waiting for more personal responsibility to show up.

I can imagine a society where one's future is increasingly determined by conscious choices. I can imagine a powerful trend toward greater personal responsibility. I can imagine a society where blame and self-pity begin to lose their prominence. I can imagine a whole lot of good stuff.
